Behind the Book: The Blue Moon

The Blue Moon jumps off right where The Crescent Moon left off. In terms of plotting, it was pretty easy to outline, though as I wrote, I was so bogged down with figuring out each character’s storylines and how they worked together.

Originally, I intended for there to be two books after The Crescent Moon but after I outlined The Blue Moon I realized that wasn’t necessary. One of the plot points I would’ve explored if there had been two books would be for Chris to wind up on an alternative timeline and discover that he and Holly hadn’t got together and he would’ve had to fight to win her back. I figured that story focused too much on Chris and too much on the romance aspect of the story so I scrapped it.

The force the witches battle in the first part of The Blue Moon is called the Chaos, something I actually made up in the very first manuscript I ever started writing at 12 years old. I worked it into another manuscript that was a sequel to the very first draft of The Blood Moon, but that manuscript was eventually thrown out.

It’s funny because there are parts from my lost manuscripts that work its way into my published work. That just goes to show that the ideas were good even if the execution wasn’t.

The Blue Moon is probably the most “adult” book in the series, only because all four characters are adults. It was also probably the most challenging only because there are so many plot points for so many characters! They’re all intertwining and overlapping that it was a struggle to figure out how to get it right, but I finally got it. It’s also the longest book in the series, coming in at just over 80,000 words (The Harvest Moon Deluxe Edition just barely clocks in at No. 2, only 100 words shorter than The Blue Moon).

It’s bittersweet to see this series come to an end, but I’m also very excited for what’s coming next. Who knows? I left the series open enough that I can explore it more if I choose to come back to it. We’ll have to see how it all plays out.

The Harpers, once a heroic family of witches, are broken. The loss of Chris and Holly’s daughter was the final straw in a series of heartbreaks and now they’ve given up on fighting for the greater good.

New secrets help point to the fate of their daughter. Working together again, they struggle to reclaim the life they once had, but ten years away from each other comes with consequences. Tensions are high as each witch grasps at every opportunity to restore their family, including working with former enemies.

While the witches learn to work with each other again and move on from the past, they leave themselves susceptible to the influence of the Fire Wizards and the Pentad, demonic supergroups that may be the end of them.

The Blue Moon is the fifth and final book in the Under the Moon Series.

The Crescent Moon is now available!

The Crescent Moon – The Harper witches have grown apart in the ten years since they defeated Toxanna and Will Brown. Each of them are on their own missions in the magical and the non-magical worlds. However, one by one, the witches are warned of a powerful force that has been unleashed that may also be linked to the death of Chris and Holly’s baby daughter. As they fight for answers to this new threat on their own, they soon discover that they have no other options but to ask for help. Unfortunately, family isn’t always the first choice for sanctuary.

The Crescent Moon is a bundle of the short stories Blaze, Timeout, Blown Away, and Deception.

Behind the Book: The Crescent Moon

The idea for The Crescent Moon came before I was even done with the first three books in the series. Seeing how it was coming up on ten years from when I first started the early drafts of The Blood Moon, I wondered where the characters would actually be in ten years’ time. Plus, I’d given them so much hell throughout those three books that they needed a break to live and grow.

Of course, in keeping with the tone of the whole series, I couldn’t just let them have a happily ever after. So I came up with the idea that Chris and Holly were married, but are now divorced. The same thing went for Kathy and Josh’s careers, they both got what they were working toward, but it’s not everything they thought it would be.

The Crescent Moon was a good way to tie up loose ends in the series and introduce more threats and alliances that would lead into the final book in the series.

When I first came up with the idea for The Crescent Moon—which is a collection of four short stories, each focusing on a different main character in the series—I thought I’d put the Under the Moon books aside for a while, maybe put out some other books, and then tease an extension of this series with the four short stories before releasing them as a collection.

Obviously, that didn’t happen.

What I ended up doing was releasing them one-by-one originally right after The Harvest Moon was released, which…didn’t have the same impact I was expecting. I thought it’d be a great way to tease the end of the series but what I ended up doing was confusing everyone. Another lesson learned.

So finally I’m releasing all four short stories together in one book, which will serve as Book 4 in the series. The Blue Moon, which is the fifth and final book, will be released in May 2017.
